You went to a place not many people can go and for that I applaud you. A great writer indeed.

I couldn't stop reading this. What's the virtual version of a page turner? I'm a sucker for material that sticks the landing, and this definitely does. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I read the first few lines of this minutes before entering an exam and was so intrigued. I've just got home and read it in full. As usual, I'm in awe. Being able to write about these topics especially is so impressive.

Can I ask who your literary heroes are? I want to read their work!

Welcome back Fraser! Thank you, again. My literary hero is Joan Didion. Her nonfiction (Magical Thinking and Blue Nights, referenced here) really informed my approach. But her fiction, stylistically, I would say had a bigger impact on me: particularly Play it As it Lays. In terms of other authors, I simply adore Marie Howe, a poet who I studied with at college. Jo Ann Beard's essay The Fourth State of Matter was also completely foundational to my growth as a writer. Hope that's what you were looking for :)

'Play It As It Lays' has been one of my best reads of the year and it really is the kind of writing that makes you think about it more than you've read it. i definitely see the influence of the constant temporal shift and emphasis on details that reward the reader later.

your writing is so distinct and it brings forth such a clear vision! i love how the painting is always fixated on and "what is lost is in the wall" relating to the battle in the painting (maybe a link to the professor frantically trying to make it work with his ex but some ships never sail? i'll save theorising for later.) the part when the painting was chopped made me cackle so hard; criticalologist forever <33

I love how the use of time enhances the revelations about the professor as well as the narrator. The focus on the painting is intriguing to me! Will be revisiting, for sure!
